Stencil Types

There are numerous types of stencils everything from signs to prototyping. The various uses for stencils is only limited to ones' imagination. Use stencil to transfer rhinestones, paint designs onto a wall, create a lighted sign where only the cutout will glow. Over the next few post we will cover the variety of materials for stencil and how they are traditionally used.

Single Use Stencil

Very detailed designs can be achieved with single use stencil. The reason single use stencil is usually only used once is due to the ability to have non bridging cutouts, meaning the middle of o's, a's, d's will stay together, not having bridges enables stencil to have seamless details.

Best uses for single use stencil

  • Fabric
  • Skin Tattoo (material/temporary adhesive is non toxic)
  • Vehicles
  • Any flat hard non porous surfaces (Wood, Metal, Plastics, Glass, Vinyl)

Stencil Painting Techniques Part 3

Dry Rolling

The best way to use a roller when painting a stencil is to use a lightweight foam roller with very little paint. the drawback to this method is the time it take to build up layers with very little paint. If you are doing a large stencil it would be best to use the dappling method for all of the cut outs of the stencil and then roll the middle portions. This will create a barrier of paint so that you do not get serious bleed through.
